Yarra Valley
Only an hour’s drive from Melbourne, Yarra Valley is Victoria’s most renowned wine region, with internationally acclaimed and award winning wines being a prominent feature of the area. The beauty of Yarra is the unique combination of large commercial wineries able to throw years of experience into the production of fine wine, with small family owned wineries producing boutique flavours and vintages. All exist peacefully alongside each other, having their own place in the overall make-up of this supreme wine grower’s paradise. Viticulture is king in this area and if you are not a wine lover then one can only assume you have come along for the beautiful landscape or the gourmet cuisine!
There is a rich history to Yarra Valley wines. Victoria’s oldest wine growing region spans 160 years, albeit with some serious revamping and replanting in between, in order to create the calibre of wines produced there today. This is Australia’s most successful cool climate wine region and unbelievably it is rolling out award winning wines in all varieties, from Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs in the white corner, to Pinots, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignons in the red corner.
Cellar tastings are encouraged by most of the Yarra vineyards, from large to small. Everyone knows that wine is best savoured, not to be rushed – it is therefore wise to stay local in order to maximise the enjoyment factor. With numerous stunning accommodation options and world class restaurants, it is not a hardship to set aside time to enjoy the grape to its full potential!
Festivals are a key player in the Yarra Valley spirit, with events being staged throughout the year, many with the emphasis on music, food and fine wine of course! Then there’s the Vintage Sports Car Rally in June and the regions well known Great Train Race in May, where locals and visitors and anyone game enough, attempt to outrun Australia’s famous Puffing Billy steam train!
All in all, a stay in Yarra Valley is fun and relaxation at its best!
